Gluten-free & Healthy Ingredients

Dry rubs are simple, versatile, and healthy – even when you buy a pre-made rub rather than collecting all the spice ingredients to make from scratch. Home made versions are easy to prepare, but a commercial version may have ingredients that are harder to find. Or, you just don’t want extra spices hanging around in your cupboard.

Spice rubs/blends are used around the world to impart a lot of flavor to grilled meats, casseroles, and stews – and are often used instead of salt. They can be stored at room temperature for long periods of time, and do not take up much space. Another great thing about dry rubs is that you can impart a lot of flavor without much work and without much added calories or cost. The typical dry rub from Serious Foodie adds between 5 to 10 calories per serving. Not much, considering that the average BBQ sauce can add about 100 to 200 calories per serving.

Serious Foodie has a wide array of flavor sets, which is a great way to explore amazing regional cuisines.

The flavors will match most every combination of meat, fish, vegetables, and tofu. The Moroccan Grill blend (also known as North African or harissa blend) focuses on sweet and hot spices that are indigenous to the region. It is commonly used in curries, stews, and as a rub for kabobs. This rub is also a perfect match for lamb, beef, chicken, couscous, and eggs. The Kentucky Bourbon rub is a different take on the typical barbecue rub. Asian Fusion Popcorn

Asian Fusion Popcorn

Indian cuisine itself is so diverse, and so interesting – it would take a lifetime to learn it all. Serious Foodie has focused on Southern Indian food which is spicy and flavorful. Use this rub prior to cooking, or sprinkle on at the end of a stir-fry for an extra flavor pop. Try it on popcorn for a truly outstanding, slightly exotic snack.

Ingredients: Sugar, Sea Salt, Paprika, Ginger Powder, Cardamom, Coriander, Cumin, Bird’s Eye Chili Powder

Asian Fusion Grilled Salmon

Another staple of South Indian cuisine is the use of fish and seafood. The Asian Fusion spice blend is perfect with meaty fish like salmon, and takes well to grilling or smoking. There is nothing easier than dry-rub marinating a piece of fish, then grilling it to perfection. Make a side of yogurt with a tablespoon or two of the Asian Fusion blend for an amazing dipping sauce.

What!!! Popcorn???

Try it once, and you will never go back to just plain salt. Make a batch of popcorn as usual, but use the Asian Fusion spice blend to season. You will be amazed.

Vegetarian Chinese Noodles

With our Chinese BBQ Rub, we bring the flavors of regional Sichuan cooking to your kitchen, using an array of spices that are common to this area. When used as a dry rub marinade, the Chinese BBQ Rub will give meat a pleasing red tint from its all natural ingredients. This is also an ideal rub to used as a seasoning ingredient to any stir fry.

Chinese BBQ Ribs

The first place to go with this bold, flavorful blend is pork – and ribs, specifically. Dry rub marinate the ribs overnight in the fridge, then slow cook the ribs on the grill or oven.

Vegetarian Chinese Noodles

A quick vegetarian meal that will have everyone singing your praises about the flavor – stir fry a bunch of veggies, cook up some noodles (we like to use gluten-free rice noodles), then add some soy sauce and a few heaping tablespoons of the Chinese BBQ blend.

Tempeh tacos

The most common use for this spice combination in Filipino cooking is dry rub marinating pork – and it is also excellent for chicken, beef, lamb, or fish. Add 2-3 tablespoons of this rub to a can of coconut milk to produce a quick, elegant curry base.

Ingredients: Orange Zest, Lemon Zest, Lime Zest, Lemongrass, Ginger, Garlic, Paprika, Coriander, Cumin, Brown Mustard, Fennel, Bird Chili Powder, Sugar, Sea Salt

Filipino Chicken Satay

Simple, quick, easy – and full of amazing flavor! Dry rub marinate chicken over night in the fridge, place on skewers, then grill. We made a quick sauce from coconut milk, lime juice, and a tablespoon of the Filipino blend – and used this same sauce to dress up the slaw. Big thumbs up from the tasters.

Filipino Tempeh tacos

We are always looking for quick, healthy vegan options when we use the Serious Foodie products. Here, we dry-rub marinated tempeh with the Filipino blend, then stir fried with onion, sweet red pepper, and chopped pineapple. It was yummy on its own, but made for a surprisingly delish (and unique) taco.

KC Ribs

KC Ribs

According to Wikipedia, “Kansas City style barbecue refers to the specific regional barbecue style of slowly smoked meat that originated from the pit of Henry Perry in the early 1900’s. Kansas City barbecue is rubbed with spices, slow-smoked over a variety of woods, then served with a tomato-based sauce.” Although we were not around during Mr. Perry’s time, we were able to re-create a rub that is true to the traditional regional version with a combination of sweet, salty, spicy and smoky flavors.

Ingredients: Demerara sugar, sea salt, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, black peppercorns, mustard powder, orange peel, oregano, ground cumin, ground coriander, celery seeds, cayenne pepper, ground cloves

Kansas City Smoked Chicken

We’ve been told this is the most moist, tastiest chicken ever – and it’s so simple. Just dry rub marinate the chicken over night in the fridge, then slow cook. We use a brand-name pellet grill, with applewood pellets.

Kansas City Ribs

What more can we say? Except – delicious. These ribs were dry-rub marinated over night in the fridge, then slow cooked for 3 hours in one of those green kettles.
